This slim, nicely designed volume will send readers into fits of anger, especially those who recall the early press on this book. Peel was rumored to have gotten an advance of over $100,000—pretty much unheard of for a collection from a minor poet. At that time the advance was granted, no one but the editors and agents involved knew what of the content; it was kept secret. Public speculation ran from Peel being a pseudonym for hip hop star Soulja Boy, to the poems being so revolutionary that they would change the way Americans think. Spam Poetry actually is what it says—text copied and pasted from junk email and reformatted in a poem format.

Unlike O Holy Cow! The Selected Verse of Phil Rizzuto, this collection of found poetry does not entertain or enlighten. It only enrages.

In her foreword, poet and author Marey Carr writes at length about the process of poetry and how, if all poetry eventually becomes about choosing the right words to convey emotions, found poetry is just as valid as traditional poetry, since the poet has to choose what to include. Even if readers agree with that, however, most will find that they've seen more interesting spam than the included poems. It seems almost as if Peel put this together on a single rainy Saturday afternoon.

The more enigmatic pieces are the most successful, but it's doubtful that even pieces like Modelmak validate this book.

Some of the spam poetry, like Hi, has an almost inspirational feel, as if the spammer were writing an homage to Rudyard Kipling or Joyce Kilmer. These poems may make readers wish Peel had stuck to a theme rather than just presenting spam randomly, as it appears in an inbox.

Perhaps if Peel had offered some analysis with this collection or added an afterword illuminating what he was trying to do, the collection wouldn't be so bemusing and vexing.
